Today, we share grandma's traditional recipe, allowing you to make this classic part of your own culinary tradition.

Grandma's Cabbage and Ham Pie

Pie Crust:

150 g of butter
3 dl of wheat flour
1/2 tsp of salt
4-5 tbsp of cold water

500 g of white cabbage
200 g of diced ham
1 onion
2 cloves of garlic
1 dl of cream or milk
2 eggs
Salt and pepper to taste
(Optional) Grated cheese for topping

Preparing the Pie Crust:

Crumble the butter and flour together. Add salt and water until the dough is of the right consistency.
Let the dough rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
Press the dough onto the greased pie dish (diameter about 24 cm), covering both the base and the edges.
Preparing the Filling:

Slice the cabbage and finely chop the onion and garlic.
Sauté the onions in butter until translucent, then add the cabbage and continue cooking until the cabbage softens and gains some color.
Add the diced ham and season the mixture with salt and pepper.
Spread the cabbage and ham mixture over the pre-baked pie crust.
In a separate bowl, mix the cream or milk with the eggs, then pour this mixture over the pie.
If desired, sprinkle grated cheese on top.

Bake in a preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit) for about 30-40 minutes, until the pie has a beautiful color and the filling has set.

Cabbage and ham pie tastes delicious both warm and cold. Serve it with a fresh salad or enjoy it on its own as a snack or light meal. It also makes an excellent picnic or work lunch.
